Hey Oppo,

I had an idea about how to make the Audi TT more interesting, worth buying, and actually raising it to a possible Cayman competitor. The concept is “relatively” simple. Swap ends. Thats right give it the MR2 treatment if the MR2 had started life as a two door corolla. Heres my reasoning. Right now the Audi TT only comes with an electronically activated 7 speed auto, thats good, because we don’t have to worry about a direct connection to the transmission, we just run wires from the paddles to the tranny. Secondly if the steering isn’t already, have it electrically assisted, again to reduce complexity (if any) of having it away from the engine and a power steering pump. swap out the location of the muffler and cat (the biggest problem in the current design would be routing the exhaust without folding back on itself and cutting power output). Put muffler where radiator is currently. Third put radiator on top of engine and route the air through air ducts to the radiator. Fourth get with Porsche for the suspension setup since they’re stable mates and they know a thing or two about rear weight bias.

Result, a Porsche suspensioned, rear transverse engined, rear-biased quattro AWD little sports car. Sure its not a direct competitor, but for people who want a small all-weather sports car for every day use it might just fit the bill.

Crude drawing below laying out a basic concept for duct placement.

Yeah! That’s good idea not sure what I didn’t think of that, I was trying to think of platform sharing possibilities since VW group is into that sort of thing.

I’m pretty sure this directly contradicts the Audi ethos

That’s a pretty cool concept. But it takes away the entire established layout that helps define the TT. You’re looking at a completely different car now. Might as well just name it something else instead.

It’s kinda just what the TT should have been in my eyes. A cute little baby R8.

What if you already love the TT?

I’ve driven two flavors of 1st gen TT (with manual) and they were a blast. Also a 2017 (or 2018 maybe, the new one) TTRS and that was phenomenal. Plus, both generations look super unique. There’s nothing else on the road like them.

Hm, like a “R6”? Yeah I could see that.

I don’t doubt they’re great cars. As I understand it though a golf gti is essentially the same car but with the bonus of practicality. I definitely agree on the style thing. Also, understand that as a Porsche fan, I actively seek to make the world more backwards.

Hey, if I could get one in rwd form I’d consider that a 100% improvement so I hear ya. Rear engined... That would be neat. I just feel like the poor TT is under appreciated!

And while we’re at it, bring the manual back to the TT-RS plz

Here’s the one! Felt fast, and scalpel-like. The rear tires had much less tread than the fronts, so it was surprisingly oversteer-y (which was nice. It’s what I’m used to). Got compliments everywhere for the two days I had it. Bonus points for yellow and the fact that the owner tracks it.

I’m not sure how Porsche would feel about the added internal competition but a baby R8 is never a bad idea.

I think you’d basically turn it into a two seater...

The breath of modifications that would have to be undertaken is insane... Why can’t you be normal and just swap a transversely mounted LS in the back and get rid of those Audi fourpots?

The TT technically shares its platform with the Golf, A3 etc but the TT uses more aluminum and other lighter/stronger materials in its structure. So it’s not only an exchange of styling for practicality.

I always liked these but have been sceered of audi parts prices and reliabilty. Tempted to go drive this one near me just to see how they feel. A mechanic acquaintance has one like it he loves.
